The Dismantlement Of The U.S. Postal Service

Back during the 2010 election cycle Rep. Darrell Issa R. (Calif), a ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, promised the postal unions that he would work on their behalf. Postal unions responded by contributing $41,000 to his re-election campaign.

That sum ranked Issa as the No. 10 beneficiary of postal union money for that cycle among the House members. So far this year, however, Issa has collected just $2,000 from postal union PACs. Because the postal union was not willing to fork over that big money, Rep. Issa has pushed “The Postal Reform Act” through the committee that oversees the postal service of which he happens to be the Chairman.

This bill will force the postal service to lay off a large number of the American postal workers who have given their lives to the service of delivering our mail through rain, sleet and yes, in my home town, the snow. This bill is a direct attack on the postal service as a result of their unwillingness to support Rep. Darrell Issa, who just happens to be one of the richest Congressmen in the House. Issa is worth about $250 million.

Just to give you a brief history of the services provided by this deeply traditional American service. The letters written by the people who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620 sent the word back to the old country that it was alright for others seeking freedom to make that journey across the Atlantic.

Informal independently-run postal routes began in Boston as early as 1639 and from Boston to New York as early as1672. For every major war that this country was engaged in: From the RevolutionaryWar,1775-1783 the Civil War, 1861-1865, WW I, 1914-1918 and through WW II,1941-1945, the postal service has been the reliable unsung hero.  Throughout all of the chaos in this world and regardless of the circumstance, the mail must get through.

Republicans want to turn the U.S. Postal Service into a private for-profi tenterprise. This would benefit those who would have the inside track on the investments for growth for their personal wealth, totally disregarding the people who have a generational connection with that American tradition.

Claiming that unions are the problem is something that the republicans have been crying about this year. They continue to try to destroy and dismantle unions, something that made this country what it is today.  This gives republicans a way to rationale their assertions that they stand for a smaller government. There are big differences between the two parties in this country…one is for the rich and powerful, and one is for the working class citizens who built this country literally with their blood sweat and tears.

We Americans was must stay diligent in our efforts to support our president who works everyday to lift the working class out of the deep abyss that the right-wing party promotes everyday.  We must support the postal workers who deliver our mail and bring us news that we just don't want in an e-mail.

Let us not forget the little boys and girls who write letters to the North Pole every year addressed to Saint Nick because they have been good little boys and girls, and are seeking their favorite Christmas present. Will you tell them to e-mail Santa?  What about the kids who mail letters to God asking him to save their puppy or their grandma who’s suffering in the hospital?  Should they send God a text message?
